What is it? A Riker Mount is a type of display case that has been used among scientists and school children for over 70 years. Riker mounts are flat, black leatherette cases with a removable glass lid - essentially a nice cheap flat box with a window in the lid. Originally used to house museum specimens, a riker mount chipboard case is also known as butterfly box and they have found their way around the globe for all types of collectables.

What does this have to do with public safety insignia? Recently, one of our customers suggested that riker mount inserts make great displays for coins, badges, pins, patches or other insignia. The display inserts are various sizes and can be used for antiques, Military items, awards, scouting memories, paper collectables, jewelry, ribbons, pens, handicrafts, buttons, knives, medals, gems… and much more.

Riker mounts come in a wide variety of sizes, from the small end of about 3" x 4" x 3/4" thick, to a large of 14" x 20" x 2" high. They are made of high quality press board or chip-board lined with a generous layer of poly-fill batting. The lid is a simple frame inset with a pane of tempered glass. It's all covered with nice black paper. Long pins at each corner hold the lid in place. The riker mount insert is the key to collectors.

A riker mount insert is a vacuum-formed flocked inserts with divided sections. They come in square sections, rectangles sections, rectangle rows for pens or thin rows for rings. They are usually sold in a variety of colors. The inserts with 2x2 sections are an excellent choice for challenge coins.
